Measure a straight line from the centre of the horses chest, horizontally along his side, finishing on the furtherest rear point on the rump.
Use a tape measure that has imperial measurements ie: feet and inches This measurement can be used as a guide for your rug size Use our size conversion guide to determine the size of the rug for your horse.
2. MEASURE AN EXISTING RUG
Firstly, please do not rely on the size label on your existing rug. Older rugs have ususally stretched or shrunk.
It is best to measure a cotton rug you are happy with the fit on the horse. Measure from the front edge of the rug- between the two chest buckles Along the length of the rug, remembering to have gussets closed, to the rear edge of the rug

CHECK THE FIT OF YOUR RUG
Put the rug on your horse, it should sit forward and infront of the wither. The rug should sit firmly around the neck and chest. The top chest buckle should be done up to the tightest or second last hole.
- If you are using the third hole or more, it suggests the horse may need a larger rug
- Leg strap should ne loose enough to prevent chaffing but, not hanging down low and loose.
- Surcingles should be done up to allow a hands width between straps and belly.
- The seam, where the tail flap attaches, should sit on top of the tail
- If it sits lower the rug is too big
- If it sits higher in front of the tail, the rug is too small
